The Old Fashioned

Drink Ingredients:
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 1 orange slice
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 1 to 2 brandied cherries
  • 1 1/2 oz of bourbon
Drink Preparations:
  • In an old-fashioned glass muddle, muddle the sugar cube with the orange slice, bitters and cherries, if using.
  • Add ice, top with bourbon and stir to mix.
For those who do not know what it is to muddle: it is to use a muddler (which looks like a small baseball bat) it is used to for mashing sugar cubes, fruit, herbs, and even ice in cocktails. When muddling fruit, such as in an Old-Fashioned. You must mash the fruit enough to release the oils in the rind.

  1. I think you mean Pestle. That is the proper name of that bat shaped object. I have been drinking this drink for the last 40+ years, I still love it!

  2. you are correct a pestle is bat shaped, but a pestle is designed for food preparation. A muddler is for alcohol.
